Petition to the Brisbane City Council, August 2022
In March this year the Federal government announced a decision to develop a nuclear submarine base on Australia’s east coast with Defence identifying Brisbane, Newcastle and Port Kembla as the most suitable locations. Both Wollongong and Newcastle City Councils have overwhelmingly rejected this proposal for their city. The costs to Brisbane would include $10 billion, serious safety risks, and Brisbane as a potential nuclear war target.
We, the following, request
- That the Brisbane City Council reject any request to host a nuclear submarine port in any area of the BCC lands, the Brisbane River or ports.
