MEDIA ALERT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE 13 June 2023
- The situation for Julian Assange is looking very grave – one last avenue of appeal left
- Time is critical – the Australian Government must work to halt the extradition process
- Extradition would have lasting ramifications on protections for journalists and press freedom
The Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) calls on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong to appeal to U.S. President Joe Biden to immediately drop the charges against Julian Assange, to close the case against him, and allow for his release without further delay, according to IPAN spokesperson, Ms Annette Brownlie.
With the recent decision rejecting Julian Assange’s appeal against his extradition, lodged last year – time is running out to secure his freedom.
“Assange has one remaining avenue for appeal, to be lodged within 5 days and to be heard by two judges in a public hearing, but we need the Australian Government to secure his freedom as soon as possible – rather than risk him being jailed in the U.S. for the rest of his life.”
Prime Minister Albanese must use the leverage the Australian Government has to secure his release. Our government simply cannot let Julian Assange die in prison in the U.K. or the U.S.
