IPAN Statement on Julian Assange Tuesday 25th January 2022

The overnight news Julian Assange’s legal team will now take his case to the UK supreme court provides another small window for the Morrison Government to act to prevent the extradition of Australian citizen and journalist Julian Assange to the USA.

The Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) is calling on the Morrison Government to immediately secure Julian Assange’s release from prison and to urgently communicate with the President of the United States of America with a strong message that the charges against him be dropped.

The December 10 UK high Court decision to allow Assange’s extradition to the US where he faces 175 years imprisonment, for publishing vital public interest news on war crimes committed by Western Governments, is an appalling act against a publisher with integrity.

Just as John Howard intervened in the cases of Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks, Prime Minister Morrison must not abandon its citizen.

At Prime Ministerial direction the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) can immediately facilitate contact between Canberra, Washington and London to secure his release from Belmarsh prison and the dropping of charges.

With the rapid deterioration in Assange’s physical and mental health, the inaction of the Morrison Government amounts to complicity in the denial of justice and a free society.
