MEDIA RELEASE     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE        22 May 2022
NEW GOVERNMENT

  • Congratulations to the new Government and incoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
  • An Opportunity for Labor to enact its commitments –
  • To sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)
  • To take a stand on the release of Julian Assange from Belmarsh prison in the U.K.

The Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) congratulates incoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

IPAN looks forward to working with the new Government in providing leadership in our region to address the current global issues of the climate crisis, wars and the threat of nuclear weapons.  The Albanese Government will come to power with a clear mandate for change, in particular, IPAN hopes to see swift and decisive action on denuclearisation and freedom for Julian Assange.

IPAN is very pleased that the Labor Party has previously committed to the signing of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), with Prime Minister Albanese having shown long-standing support for nuclear disarmament.

IPAN also notes the Labor Party’s commitment to seeing the release of Australian citizen Julian Assange from Belmarsh prison in the U.K.

IPAN spokesperson, Dr Ross Gwyther, said: “The election result shows that the people of Australia believe tackling the climate crisis, government integrity and protecting the wellbeing and livelihoods of all people are paramount issues.”
“IPAN looks forward to Australia having representation at the first meeting of states parties to the TPNW as an observer in Vienna from 21-23 June.”
“Prime Minister Albanese has an immediate opportunity to speak with the U.S. President Joe Biden at the Quad meeting and ask him to drop the extradition request for Assange. This would be an immediate and tangible way for the Government to establish a new agenda for restoring democratic rights, transparency and justice for all Australians.”—–ENDS—–
